Who’s Stealing Your Stuff?
I was reading a rant by another blogger who was annoyed by those who were copying his content into their websites without giving him the proper accreditation. He was looking for a solution to his problem, something different than Copyscape… and boy, did he find it!
There’s a great new FREE tool called Tynt Tracer (currently in expanded beta) that covertly tracks those who copy even just a little of your content… and adds YOUR link to the copied material!
Seriously… This Is The Coolest Thing!!
Check out this short demo video:
Let me know if you find this as awesome as I do!
Worldwide Internet Consulting: Franchise Scam
A few days ago, Tony Blake and I were discussing a new product launch from Ian Del Carmen. He pointed out several disturbing things about this “opportunity”, and as a result of our conversation, he contacted our favourite, brilliant attorney Mike Young.
Mike Young is a no-nonsense expert in legal business matters, and he regularly “tells it like it is” as a valued expert moderator at ABlakeForum.com.
Mike knows his stuff… and he posted an extremely informative article on his blog.
Here’s a link:

Pet Peeve: Why I Am Ripping My Hair Out
I can’t be the ONLY marketer who runs into this situation.
I run about 30 extremely active websites. I have another 50 or so that run with minimal supervision… and another bunch in development at any given moment.
Now this issue doesn’t crop up too often, but it happens enough that I took great pains to avoid the problem, yet here it is again.
EMAIL IS NOT A RELIABLE FORM OF COMMUNICATION!
I just got a message from someone letting me know that THEY had received a HELP DESK TICKET because the person didn’t get a reply from an email they had sent to me – and this person (for whatever reason) decided to complain to the person who referred my services.
I HAVE A SUPPORT DESK!
If I don’t receive an email, there can be many reasons for it…
Perhaps your email was deleted as SPAM by some vigilant filter.
Maybe it got lost in the hundreds of garbage emails I get every single day and it was simply overlooked.
Perhaps I am not at my main computer for a few days due to travel, and have not yet seen it.
Or a simple misspelling of an email address sent it off to Siberia.
Whatever.
Social networks like Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, etc. are NOT a good way to reach me either. I do not monitor these for important business communications – I use them for social networking and entertainment, and do not have time to spend more than a few hours a week tending to these accounts.
I set up my Support Desk because it is FAR more reliable than email. Submitting a ticket, you can’t misspell my email address, or get lost in a SPAM filter or junk folder. If I am away from my main computer for a few days, I check my Support Desk regularly to make sure anyone who needs me gets an answer right away.
Here’s my lesson for today:
If you have an important question, concern or request that you need an answer for immediately, USE MY SUPPORT DESK.
Do You Sell Your Integrity?
I just finished reading a post entitled “A Friend Asked Me To Warn You…” by Ken McArthur, a prominent marketer who is well-known for being an upstanding, nice guy throughout the internet marketing world. You can read the post by clicking here.
I was sorely disappointed by this post for a number of reasons.
First, I dislike it intensely when a marketer uses misleading subject lines and headlines in order to deceive people into clicking a link. When they say that even bad publicity is good publicity, “they” are wrong. If this post had been selling something, I would have refused to purchase it based solely on the deception.
Second, I was truly disappointed by the content. The opening sentences had me believing that Ken was finally going to warn his followers and revoke his endorsement of a particularly unsavoury character. I’ve emailed him privately about the matter, and most experienced and connected marketers are aware of the person’s lack of integrity, but only through “back channels”.
Sadly, these top marketers continue to ignore the problem, insisting that it’s not for them to say anything… that the new marketers will learn on their own.
But at what expense?
Ken posted a second blog post: “Controversy Or Communication?” where he elaborated on the original post further. You can read it by clicking here. I posted a lengthy comment there as well.
What’s your opinion?
Are you selling your integrity to maintain your popularity with the “Big Boys”? Promoting questionable products and marketers regardless of their ethics or the value of their products? Letting your followers “find out for themselves” about unethical marketers instead of speaking up and providing true direction for them?
I’m interested in hearing your point of view.

The Perceived Value Of “Free”
In recent months, there has been a notable increase in marketers talking about “moving the free line”, and generally instructing new marketers to give away valuable content to build their lists, in order to create customers in the future.
On the surface, there seemed to be some value in this advice. After all, there are giveaways popping up daily, free reports everywhere… all with the intention of obtaining that all-important email address on a double opt-in form.
I decided to test this theory. (This is a simplified version)
I am creating a product for a niche I have been active in for some time. (Sorry, I am not going to reveal the niche; suffice it to say that it’s as competitive as the IM niche). The product I am developing contains useful software, a detailed info product on pdf, an audio version of the info product and a video showing how to use the software along with the info product.
I will create one other product of similar value and structure, and two reports with additional, related advice and tips.
I’ll purchase two very similar domain names, created two websites. One website to give away the product for free, just for opting in to my list.
The other will be a basic sales page using similar language, but charging $67 for the product. Upon successful payment, the customer will be directed to the download page which includes an opt-in form for the same newsletter.
I will employ the exact same marketing strategies to each site. I’ll drive traffic, use PPC, post in related forums, create articles – all the usual things.
The opt-in will enroll each subscriber in to a seven part email series as follows:
- (immediate delivery) A thank you for downloading the product, along with their download link in case they weren’t redirected after payment/signup.
- (two days later) A repeat of the benefits of the product, and encouragement to take action with it. I’ll also include a link to download one of the two reports I am creating as an additional bonus.
- (three days later) Pure content, highly related to the product and includes several valuable resources for more information.
- (three days later) Again, pure, actionable content.
- (three days later) Give away the second bonus report. This bonus report is a lead-in to the second product, and in fact has links inside taking them to the product sales page.
- (three days later) Again content, leaving off with a teaser at the end about how a specific problem talked about would be solved in the next email and to watch for it.
- (sent out two days later) Purely promotional, sending subscribers to the sales page for my second product. This product will be priced at $47.
Can you predict what my results will be?
I’d love to hear your thoughts!!
Rick Butts Rocks
If there’s anything I really appreciate it’s someone who says what he thinks – no holds barred. I really enjoy fresh perspectives that are driven by the sincere wish to educate, and better still, when their opinion coincides with my own.
Rick Butts just posted a video about the “Worst Internet Marketing Advice He’s Ever Heard”, and it’s right on the money, in my opinion.
Rick’s recent blog post “Unsubscribe From Whomever Emailed You Stompernet” back in mid-May was a great discussion-starter. It’s entirely useless to be subscribed to endless lists that regurgitate cut-and-paste emails for every promotion under the sun.
These types of emails tell me two things:
- The person who wrote (cut-and-pasted) the product owner’s supplied email has not bothered to review the product/service themselves; if they had, they would have supplied me with their own personal assessment.
- The person who sent this email couldn’t even be bothered to spend a few moments to personalize it, which generally means to me that they are not interested in educating or providing products targeted to their list – they are simply looking for a quick buck.
While it’s not a bad idea to subscribe to a list if you think you may get value from it, don’t be afraid you’ll “miss something” by unsubscribing if they are simply spewing duplicate emails that clog up your inbox.
The advice that Rick made his rant video about – subscribing to every list you can find – is a ridiculous waste of your time. Find and follow those who share your values, provide excellent content/advice, and most importantly, fit with the goals you’ve set out for your business.
Mike Filsaime’s “The 7 Figure Secrets”: Good Product? Bad Approach?
Everyone has been bombarded with the latest offering from Mike Filsaime, The 7 Figure Secrets release today. As always, everyone and their dog is promoting it…
My issue is with the forced continuity.
Recently, “hidden” forced continuity offers have been a huge sore spot in the internet marketing community and have put all continuity programs under a very harsh spotlight. You can read up on some of the laws and controversy that has been discussed here: “Continuity Programs…” and here: “Illegal Forced Continuity Programs”.
While Mike’s forced continuity isn’t “hidden”, it’s certainly not right there, smacking you in the face. And truly… is it even necessary?
If I had gotten this sales page minus the forced continuity, and the content in the newsletter was worthy, I would buy it!! Straight up marketing would have done the job! There is NO reason that he had to resort to this type of tactic that right now is perceived as sneaky and underhanded.
If you plan to take advantage of his offer, just be completely aware that there IS forced continuity… and worse, if you want to cancel, you can’t just unsubscribe – you actually have to make a long distance phonecall (depending where you are) in order to cancel.
I see zero benefit to making it difficult to unsubscribe. It will only make people VERY cautious when dealing with you in future.
I’d love to hear your thoughts!
******************UPDATE********************
Apparently I must not be the only one voicing an opinion… the order page NOW says that unsubscribing is possible via the helpdesk…
Donna Fox – Not Just Another Pretty Face…
I just read a great post on Donna Fox’s blog, Why She Buys Reporter about women in Internet Marketing… specifically the lack of recognition from (some of) our male counterparts!
It’s amazing that people in this day and age can make general comments such as, “There aren’t any women speakers in Internet Marketing.”… and say it to one of the foremost female speakers around!
I myself have suffered through the pats on the head and “babe” comments, and have (on several occasions) been patronized as if I couldn’t possibly have an intelligent thought in my head unless a man put it there.
If you’re a woman in Internet Marketer, speaker or not, visit Donna’s blog and comment on her post. Let’s get more visible!
Questions By Tony Blake Answered by Dr. Mani In Blog Attack
.
Today I saw a Twitter made by Tony Blake…
“You’re beginning to remind me of me of Joe Kumar — think about it – Are you even a REAL Dr. anymore?”
This was in response to yet another post by Dr. Mani about starting Twitzine – a new ezine Dr. Mani has created.
Now, I have been party to dozens of conversations, conferences, etc. that have questioned exactly that – whether Dr. Mani is actually a doctor, if there is actually a Foundation, etc. I’ve heard snide comments, I’ve listened to people voice the cynical view that it’s likely a ploy, and I myself am ashamed to say I’ve never bothered to ask the questions.
Thank God Tony Blake finally had enough of all the speculation and asked.
Sadly, Dr. Mani decided to take offense. Here’s his reply:
http://guydz.com/moneypowerwisdom/influence-gone-wrong/
I was completely disappointed by this post, because I’ve always liked Dr. Mani, and I didn’t expect that kind of response to a pointed question – especially from someone who he knows has influence, and is well-known for being extremely direct. He has exposed many scammers in his day.
Just being on Tony Blake’s radar at all is a huge compliment to Dr. Mani’s marketing efforts.
After posting this attack, Dr. Mani deleted Tony Blake from his Twitter list.
At Christmas, I was fundraising for something called the Grinch Fund – you may recall… In only 2 short weeks, in the Internet Marketing niche alone, we raised almost $3000. One very large reason for this was due to the efforts that Tony Blake made on my behalf.
Do you think that Tony didn’t grill me about this? No, Tony is NOT the most diplomatic of souls, but he is probably the most ethical man I know in the internet marketing industry. And if he says to trust someone, I know he’s already asked the hard questions. If he says someone is a scammer, then all I need to do is ask for the proof and he’ll be happy to provide it.
And if he doesn’t know, he will definitely ask – and likely in a way to evoke an immediate answer from honest people, and total ignorance from those who are scamming.
As I said at the beginning of this post, I’m sad and disappointed by Dr. Mani’s reply via his blog. These questions are discussed at length out of his hearing, and it would have been more in keeping with what I expected from Dr. Mani if he’d replied with grace.
Apparently I was mistaken.
Here is Tony Blake’s video reply, for anyone who’s interested:

I’m very interested in people’s thoughts on this.
I Pay My Bills With Cash – Not Digital Products
Dear Aspiring Internet Marketer;
Thanks for the amazingly complimentary email about the quality of my work – and the offer you made for my services!
Earlier today I went down to my bank. I told them that I would gladly pay my mortgage by trading my services plus your digital products/ CD/ and private membership site for what I owe this month.
They called the security guard and escorted me out of the building.
Undeterred, I went to the grocery store. I filled my basket with everything I need for meals in the next week. I went to the check-out and made them the same offer.
They took away the cart, escorted me to the door, and asked me to never come back.
Still headstrong I went to a restaurant and had a fantastic meal. When the bill came I offered them the same exact deal. They called the cops, I spent a night in jail and now have to work washing dishes for 3 nights to pay off what I owe for the meal. The nice thing is that they let me have all the table scraps I can scrounge.
Please don’t take this the wrong way, but frankly, I can’t pay my bills or feed myself with what you offer. Eating digital products/ CDs/ and private membership sites full of products and services i can’t use is not very filling, nutritious or profitable.
Thanks again, but I think I’ll pass.
Sincerely,
A hungry and very pruney
Lisa Preston
PS – A bit of advice for those who try this tactic of emailing for free advice, design ideas, and ultimately attempting to barter services or products in exchange for design work: Be up front. It would save a lot of valuable time. There are dozens of forums and websites where you can post exactly that type of exchange – please use them! I’m sure that you’ll find outstanding designers there who would love to make a name for themselves in this way.
Unfeeling, Heartless Monsters!!!
.
Ever have that deep-down, gut wrenching feeling that makes you just sick in your heart? I woke today to that hollow feeling…
My sister works at a local pub/restaurant that is a long-time fixture in the community, and the staff and patrons are more like family than anything else. Every year, they work tirelessly and generously to raise funds for local children who are without homes, families and more – and who would pass sadly through the Christmas season without any kind of celebration, without a single gift otherwise.
This year, they have a list of 32 little children, and due to their enthusiasm and dedication to raising as much as they possibly could, they were able to raise over $7000 to provide a Christmas celebration for these awesome, eager little kids.
Can you just imagine how those little faces must be shining with hope this year? All smiles, just beside themselves with joy that they won’t pass through the Christmas season without notice this year? The warm and powerful message they are learning about the kindness of strangers?
Well, how do you tell one of those little shining faces – nevermind 32 – that it can’t happen after all?
This morning at 7 am, we were awakened by the phone to learn that the establishment has been broken into… and you guessed it – the filthy thieves stole the Christmas “Grinch Fund” that was lovingly collected and proudly promoted, all for the kids. With a sledgehammer and hacksaw, they were able to disappear with well over $7000… and the kids’ Christmas.
What kind of heartless monster would do such an evil thing?
The tearful staff and customers are heartbroken, but still haven’t given up. Nobody wants the task of telling these kids they won’t have Christmas after all. So in desperation, they are exhausting every avenue to recoup those losses – and I am begging you to help.
Please…
If you have the ability to give to this worthy effort, I’m asking for your generosity this season. ANY amount! It’s so rare to be able to see the tangible effects of a donation, and I know that every single penny will go towards those children.
READY… AIM… WIRED! RAW Truth On Web 2.0 Social Marketing
.
Have you ever watched someone who was so excited that they visibly vibrate? Well, for the past few days, I’ve been watching in fascination as Steve Iser, a fellow Canadian Internet Marketer, geared up for his long-awaited launch of Ready.Aim.Wired!
Hopped up on Red Bull, adrenaline and lack of sleep, Steve has spent the past few days ramping up for today’s big launch – a day he’s been working towards for almost an entire year.
And the results of all his hard work far surpass everyone’s expectations.
When Steve called me and asked me about promoting his project, I told him up front that I would have to look it over before I’d commit to an endorsement; I take great pains to not join the herd, promoting everything that comes down the pike. Needless to say, I was blown away by the entire package – Steve REALLY knows his stuff… Ready.Aim.Wired! is probably one of the best products I’ve seen this year.
But don’t take my word for it – go take a look for yourself…
Are You Intrusive? (rant)
.
I get lots of people contacting me every day – asking for an opinion, a review, a recommendation, promotion… Is there a point when you say “enough is enough”?
I’m at a point that I need some advice to deal with this issue.
I have always tried to be very transparent and accessible to anyone who needs me, and try to share what I can to help others in their quest for success. But it’s come to a point where as soon as I log onto my computer, I have 10 people immediately needing my help with something. I spend a good portion of my day distracted by interruptions from people who could find the answers to the problems they ask me about with a simple search on any internet marketing forum!
Now, I try very hard to answer whatever questions are asked, but it costs me a minimum of 4 hours per day. Occasionally it even requires research to provide the proper resources. Or an in-depth analysis of an abysmal sales letter or product. Or worse, they ask in-depth questions that are better suited to an hour or two on the phone with a coach or mentor.
And THEN these same people, once they have gotten their answers, ask, “So… how’s things?” or, “So – what are YOU working on?”
Well, let me answer that for ya…
First, I just spent an hour of my valuable time explaining to you how to create a payment button, or write a sales page, or sign up with ClickBank… all things that could have been learned through an ebook or from any marketing forum – just type it into Google. I was very patient and helpful, and now I need to work on my own projects. I don’t have time to sit and shoot the breeze via Messenger!
PLEASE… If you need help, I’ll remain accessible. But at least make a TINY effort to not waste my time or yours with things you could learn far easier by searching. I am delighted to help if you get stuck, and can’t find a solution – but you really need to learn things on your own, not simply be spoon-fed every single step of the way.
For those of you who have access to me via Messengers – I’ve turned them off. Please send a ticket through the Help Desk so that I can answer your problems during a time when I’m not in the middle of something. Or use email. You’ll be delighted to know that I’m in the midst of creating a forum where I’ll be accessible far more often! AND, the best part is, the forum will provide future marketers with the knowledge they need – thanks to all of you and YOUR questions!
The new forum (still under wraps) will be launched on June 1st.
If anyone has any suggestions, comments, criticism, etc. – I’m all ears.
