In recent months, there has been a notable increase in marketers talking about “moving the free line”, and generally instructing new marketers to give away valuable content to build their lists, in order to create customers in the future.

On the surface, there seemed to be some value in this advice. After all, there are giveaways popping up daily, free reports everywhere… all with the intention of obtaining that all-important email address on a double opt-in form.

I decided to test this theory. (This is a simplified version)

I am creating a product for a niche I have been active in for some time. (Sorry, I am not going to reveal the niche; suffice it to say that it’s as competitive as the IM niche). The product I am developing contains useful software, a detailed info product on pdf, an audio version of the info product and a video showing how to use the software along with the info product.

I will create one other product of similar value and structure, and two reports with additional, related advice and tips.

I’ll purchase two very similar domain names, created two websites. One website to give away the product for free, just for opting in to my list.

The other will be a basic sales page using similar language, but charging $67 for the product. Upon successful payment, the customer will be directed to the download page which includes an opt-in form for the same newsletter.

I will employ the exact same marketing strategies to each site. I’ll drive traffic, use PPC, post in related forums, create articles – all the usual things.

The opt-in will enroll each subscriber in to a seven part email series as follows:

1. (immediate delivery) A thank you for downloading the product, along with their download link in case they weren’t redirected after payment/signup.
2. (two days later) A repeat of the benefits of the product, and encouragement to take action with it. I’ll also include a link to download one of the two reports I am creating as an additional bonus.
3. (three days later) Pure content, highly related to the product and includes several valuable resources for more information.
4. (three days later) Again, pure, actionable content.
5. (three days later) Give away the second bonus report. This bonus report is a lead-in to the second product, and in fact has links inside taking them to the product sales page.
6. (three days later) Again content, leaving off with a teaser at the end about how a specific problem talked about would be solved in the next email and to watch for it.
7. (sent out two days later) Purely promotional, sending subscribers to the sales page for my second product. This product will be priced at $47.

Can you predict what my results will be?

If there’s anything I really appreciate it’s someone who says what he thinks – no holds barred. I really enjoy fresh perspectives that are driven by the sincere wish to educate, and better still, when their opinion coincides with my own.

Rick Butts just posted a video about the “Worst Internet Marketing Advice He’s Ever Heard”, and it’s right on the money, in my opinion.

Rick’s recent blog post “Unsubscribe From Whomever Emailed You Stompernet” back in mid-May was a great discussion-starter. It’s entirely useless to be subscribed to endless lists that regurgitate cut-and-paste emails for every promotion under the sun.

These types of emails tell me two things:

1. The person who wrote (cut-and-pasted) the product owner’s supplied email has not bothered to review the product/service themselves; if they had, they would have supplied me with their own personal assessment.
2. The person who sent this email couldn’t even be bothered to spend a few moments to personalize it, which generally means to me that they are not interested in educating or providing products targeted to their list – they are simply looking for a quick buck.

While it’s not a bad idea to subscribe to a list if you think you may get value from it, don’t be afraid you’ll “miss something” by unsubscribing if they are simply spewing duplicate emails that clog up your inbox.

The advice that Rick made his rant video about – subscribing to every list you can find – is a ridiculous waste of your time. Find and follow those who share your values, provide excellent content/advice, and most importantly, fit with the goals you’ve set out for your business.

Everyone has been bombarded with the latest offering from Mike Filsaime, The 7 Figure Secrets release today. As always, everyone and their dog is promoting it…

My issue is with the forced continuity.

Recently, “hidden” forced continuity offers have been a huge sore spot in the internet marketing community and have put all continuity programs under a very harsh spotlight. You can read up on some of the laws and controversy that has been discussed here: “Continuity Programs…” and here: “Illegal Forced Continuity Programs”.

While Mike’s forced continuity isn’t “hidden”, it’s certainly not right there, smacking you in the face. And truly… is it even necessary?

If I had gotten this sales page minus the forced continuity, and the content in the newsletter was worthy, I would buy it!! Straight up marketing would have done the job! There is NO reason that he had to resort to this type of tactic that right now is perceived as sneaky and underhanded.

If you plan to take advantage of his offer, just be completely aware that there IS forced continuity… and worse, if you want to cancel, you can’t just unsubscribe – you actually have to make a long distance phonecall (depending where you are) in order to cancel.

I see zero benefit to making it difficult to unsubscribe. It will only make people VERY cautious when dealing with you in future.

Apparently I must not be the only one voicing an opinion… the order page NOW says that unsubscribing is possible via the helpdesk…

If you’ve tried any of the dozens of List Building programs online, and had little to no success… you not alone!

I was in the exact same situation, until I heard about The List Auction.

There are more ways to promote your site (with less effort than you can imagine!), than I’ve ever seen before! Of all of the sites I’ve used there was always one or two things I really liked about them, but the majority of the features seemed like clutter or a distraction.

Plus, it was way too much work to get any kind of a return on my time! Things have definitely changed for me!

It’s like Mike pulled each of my favorite features from my current list builder sites, eliminated all of the things I couldn’t stand, and threw in a couple of completely new and cutting edge tactics that make results exponentially better than I had ever thought possible!

If you’ve tried all of the other sites that have you busting your hump trying to earn credits just a few at a time, then you’re in for a shock because Mike makes it almost too easy with the Credit Auctions (where you can actually earn $ by auctioning off your credits… yes real moo lah!), and the “Golden Nugget Email”… Sorry I can’t give this one away but you’ll soon be addicted and having a blast!

I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately about Private Label Rights (PLR) content. I used to think that it was only for lazy people who didn’t want to do their own writing. But as I learn more, I’ve come up with lots of great ways I can use PLR in my own business.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, PLR is content that you get from the original author along with their permission to use it as your own. So you can get a great report, put your name on it and have your own product to sell or give away!

The first couple of products I created using PLR only took me about an hour. There have been a few sales so far from them so that was definitely time well spent.

When searching for PLR content to use, I found there were a lot of different types of sites available. Some offered monthly memberships and others offered just one time purchases. So be sure to look around before you decide where to buy.

The site I found that was by far the best was PLRWholesaler. Not only do they have an unbelievable amount of content, but it’s completely FREE. Most sites charge an arm and a leg for the amount of content that this guy is giving away.

And although I haven’t been through everything yet, what I have read is very good quality. It’s stuff you would actually want to use as your own.

Since it’s free, I highly recommend that you check out PLRWholesaler and see if they have anything that you can use in your business. There just may be an ebook or audio recording that you could quickly brand with your information and start selling to your list.
