Rick Butts Rocks

Rick ButtsIf there’s anything I really appreciate it’s someone who says what he thinks - no holds barred. I really enjoy fresh perspectives that are driven by the sincere wish to educate, and better still, when their opinion coincides with my own.

Rick Butts just posted a video about the “Worst Internet Marketing Advice He’s Ever Heard”, and it’s right on the money, in my opinion.

Rick’s recent blog post “Unsubscribe From Whomever Emailed You Stompernet” back in mid-May was a great discussion-starter. It’s entirely useless to be subscribed to endless lists that regurgitate cut-and-paste emails for every promotion under the sun.

These types of emails tell me two things:

  1. The person who wrote (cut-and-pasted) the product owner’s supplied email has not bothered to review the product/service themselves; if they had, they would have supplied me with their own personal assessment.
  2. The person who sent this email couldn’t even be bothered to spend a few moments to personalize it, which generally means to me that they are not interested in educating or providing products targeted to their list - they are simply looking for a quick buck.

While it’s not a bad idea to subscribe to a list if you think you may get value from it, don’t be afraid you’ll “miss something” by unsubscribing if they are simply spewing duplicate emails that clog up your inbox.

The advice that Rick made his rant video about - subscribing to every list you can find - is a ridiculous waste of your time. Find and follow those who share your values, provide excellent content/advice, and most importantly, fit with the goals you’ve set out for your business.

Hey Lisa - thanks for the kind words - I USED to rock (and roll) back in the long hair hippie guitar God days - but thanks.

There are people who have presented themselves as experts - by appearing on stage at IM events (because they have a healthy product to sell that can pay the promoter 50% or $500 for each shill - I mean customer sold)

And what these people say motivates others to act. I can just see someone thinking - cool, this is a good idea and promptly drowning in conflicting information and destroying their chances at success - and wasting a lot of precious startup momentum and dollars.

Thanks for helping to spread some common sense.

I am at your service if you need me.

Rick Buttss last blog post..Ross Goldberg Gives Worst Internet Marketing Advice I’ve Ever Heard

Hey Rick - Thanks for your comment!! (I DO provide “Link Luv!!” LOL)

It’s a dangerous place that allows people the ability to declare expertise on any subject, regardless of their knowledge. Within the internet marketing community you’ll often see this “fake it until you make it” mentality, and it’s poison.

I completely appreciate you, and all others who “out” those who utilize this mantra.

I know you hate me, but I gotta say. You’re right Lisa.

The more BS these jokers push out the more people love them. Fake it till ya’ make it is no honest way to make money, and is down right unethical.

A doctor can’t get away with claiming he’s a brain surgeon when really he’s only passed his biology SATs, so why should IMers who are (to be blunt) utter failures, get to make such outlandish claims?

Hey, David!
I’m not sure where you get the idea I “hate” you… I’m just old fashioned. I admire what you’ve accomplished, and think I’ve even said so on several occasions.

On the issue at hand… I think Rick is “spot on” as well. And this isn’t the first time I’ve been compelled to strongly disagree with something that this particular marketer has said…

In this post http://www.lisapreston.info/2008/05/04/affiliate-blogging-basics/ I was referring to one of his “tutorials”, and simply HAD to reply. I didn’t link to it, simply because it would be totally irresponsible to do so, just in case someone actually followed the advice!

Anyway, David - thanks for commenting!! Hope to see you again!

You got that right Lisa. And as for the “Fake it till you make it mentality” it really hits a nerve with me. I recently had someone tell me in a forum that because I have no screenshots of my clickbank account they they will not listen to anything I say. Now I could “make some up” but I don’t want to do that.

Why can’t I just be honest and share my journey to riches with everyone. It makes me wonder whether folks WANT to hear that nonsense.

Hey Deb - Nice to see you again!

People like that are more trouble than they’re worth. I saw someone else today get reported (to an ISP I think it was) as a spammer - because the person thought his prices were too high!! UNREAL!

The beauty of not falling into that common “fake it till you make it” marketing mentality is that the people who follow you on your rise through the ranks can watch you grow and even sometimes steer you in a better direction.

I’m always wary of people that claim expertise in every area. Especially when dispensing questionable advice, and have been marketing online for a very short time. The scariest of them all are the ones who speak with conviction and apparent charisma, enough to have new marketers believe they know what they’re talking about.

Thanks again for stopping by!!
